Folks, forgive me for going a tad off-topic here, but it's a big deal, when science fiction, or horror, plays on, or near, Broadway-- And this sounds neat! Best, Jim _____________________________ Science fiction marks a rare debut on Manhattan's theatre scene when Off-Broadway's legendary York Theatre Company stages the pop-rock musical, WEIRD ROMANCE to conclude its famed spring "Musicals in Mufti" series of staged concert performances, from April 2-4. The "Muftis" present rarely revived musical shows from the past, or musicals that have somehow NEVER gotten their appropriate attention. Remarkably, WEIRD ROMANCE features music by Alan Menken, whose hit shows and movies include LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and Disney's THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and ALADDIN.) The book (script) for WEIRD ROMANCE is by Alan Brennert and David Spencer, and the lyrics are by Spencer. WEIRD ROMANCE is actually two one-act plays: the first, "The Girl Who Was Plugged In," is based on James Tiptree Jr.'s (aka Alice Sheldon's) famed early 1970s short story, and the second play is Alan Brennert's "Her Pilgrim Soul." ("The Girl Who Was Plugged In" is considered by some to be one of the early forerunners of the "cyberpunk" literary science fiction movement, that led to, ultimately, amongst other things, films like THE MATRIX. ("Her Pilgrim Soul" was also one of the few famous episodes from the CBS TWILIGHT ZONE revival series, of the 1980s.) The "Musicals in Mufti" production will mark the New York debut of a newly revised version of the show with two new songs; it will be directed by Sheryl Kaller, and Fred Lassen will serve as musical director. WEIRD ROMANCE will be presented for five performances only, Friday through Sunday, with three evening performances, and two matinees, on the weekend. (Each matinee performance is followed by a talk-back/question and answer session with members of the production.) Performances are at the York Theatre at St. Peter's in Citigroup Center (619 Lexington Avenue at 54th Street). Tickets are available online at www.smarttix.com, or by phoning 212-868-4444. (For savings on a MUFTI mini-subscription, you can call the York box office at 212-935-5820= .) For more information about WEIRD ROMANCE, and the York Theatre Company, visit www.yorktheatre.org. |
Hehe. This leads to think how UFO would be like if it were made into a
musical. I can just imagine Straker crooning about his UFO blues. Or perhaps a Moonbase dance number with Ellis and the purple-wigged gals. :-) --- In [hidden email], "jimburns1999" <jameshburns@w...> wrote: > > > Folks, forgive me for going a tad off-topic here, but it's a big deal, > when science fiction, or horror, plays on, or near, Broadway-- > And this sounds neat! > > Best, Jim > _____________________________ > Science fiction marks a rare debut on Manhattan's theatre scene when > Off-Broadway's legendary York Theatre Company stages the pop-rock > musical, WEIRD ROMANCE to conclude its famed spring |
