US Nuclear submarines use compressed air to launch their intercontinental
ballistic missiles, from the sub. Once in the air, the rocket boosters
ignite. That would have been the obvious way to launch Sky1 too. Then the
special effects" would only need to be bubbles.
I guess that information wasn't public knowledge back in the seventies or
maybe the Anderson's didn't watch the Discovery Channel
