Skydivers`

Anthony Lazenby
Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many Skydiver Subs there are? Sky 4
was refered too in PSYCHOBOMBS.

As far as I know there's no definitive answer - But it seems
to be implied in most of the episodes that there is only one.
Apart from PSYCHOBOMBS, we only ever see Sky One involved in
any of the action (although a 'replacement Sky One' is shown
in ORDEAL). In Reflections In The Water for example, the task
of wiping out a large number of incoming UFOs falls exclusively
to Sky One.

However as you point out there are clearly at least four
SkyDivers in PSYCHOBOMBS, SkyDiver 4 being destroyed in
that episode. There's never a reference to a Sky 5 (or 6,
or 7 ..) in any episode though.

I think it makes more sense that SHADO would have a large-ish
fleet of SkyDivers - can't really hope to cover all the potential
UFO entry points into the atmosphere with just one. It would
take weeks for a conventional sub to get to a location on the
other side of the world, and even with 'sea skim' capability I
guess it would take days. It's possible I suppose that Sky One
has an improbable airborne range of tens of thousands of miles,
but then why bother to carry it round the world's oceans on the
front of a submarine in the first place? Might as well just keep
it in an underground hangar on some secret island or something.

However, I think that PSYCHOBOMBS is a bit of an abberation,
and for the majority of episodes we're supposed to assume that
there's only one Skydiver/Sky One.

No, you're quite right Angelo - it was indeed SkyDiver 3. Sorry.
