Hi all,
Branko pointed out to me that the BitTorrent site demonoid.com has
high-definition versions of Space: 1999 episodes, derived from the "ITV HD"
broadcasts currently taking place in the UK. I downloaded one of the
episodes and then made a frame capture comparison with the most recent
Space:1999 DVD release:
http://www.ufoseries.com/hd1999/Obviously, the HDTV version has more resolution, although I'm not sure
if this much resolution is really needed! Also, the top and the bottom
of the original frame is chopped off to make it in widescreen.
Some notes about the frame captures -- while the DVD capture is straight
from the DVDs, the HDTV capture is based on the MPEG-4 file download,
which does NOT contain all of the detail of the original broadcast.
(the original broadcast was apparently a 6gb MPEG-4 h264 file,
while the download was a 2gb MPEG-4 xvid file). Note that even
with the smaller file size, my computer still does not have enough
CPU power to play the file in realtime at full-resolution.
Also, note that the aspect ratios of the frame captures are wrong --
computers use square pixels and TV's use rectangular pixels, so
some adjustment would have to be made to get the images in the
proper 3:4 and 16:9 ratio.
Anyone, we can wonder if ITV HD will be showing UFO sometime in
the near future -- it'd be a great way to get some really
hi-resolution frame captures! :-)
Marc
