Hi all,
While we all wait for UFO to come out on Blu-ray disc, I'll note that in the UK, Space:1999 Year One is now available on Blu-ray disc. And for people outside of the UK, I understand that these Blu-ray discs are NOT region restricted, so they should play on any Blu-ray player anywhere. This set also includes 2 DVDs with special features, but these are PAL Region 2 DVDs (won't play on just any DVD/Blu-ray player). In the USA, A&E will also be releasing Space:1999 on Blu-ray disc in December, but I understand this set will have fewer special features than the UK set (missing the Year 2 episode "The Metamorph", shorter interview with Sylvia Anderson, etc.) So we've now seen releases of The Prisoner, Thunderbirds, and Space:1999 Year One on Blu-ray... can UFO be far behind? Hello Marc, I have just purchased the Space 1999 bluray boxed set. I watched the Sylvia Anderson interview, and I must say I was not impressed. While most of the interview with other cast and crew has always been positive. Sylvia appeared to bot have a good word for anyone! Of course I maybe my knowledge of the way she treated Gerry after the marriage breakup may have tainted my view. However, I just felt that it is 35 years ago, and she still can't let go. Thanks for that -- yes, I've certainly heard lots of negative things said about Space:1999... there was an old Fanderson documentary that had lots of that too (can't remember if that came from Sylvia or multiple people). I think she was more positive in the UFO: TIMELASH commentary track with Wanda Ventham... :-) And negative or positive, one thing about Sylvia is that unlike a lot of the cast and crew, she actually seems to remember little details about things that happened decades ago! Howard, I've not heard any commentaries from Sylvia. I share your wariness of her regarding her treatment of Gerry and their child. Gerry never mentions her at all in his commentary on Identified and has only good things to say about just about everyone. It makes for pleasant listening. Can't say I'm tempted by the BluRays myself. I'm content with the DVD's and I'm trying not to end up with multiple formats of the same thing. The only thing that might sway me is some extra cool additional material but since anyone who I might want to hear talking about UFO is now dead that seems unlikely. There is a 3D blu ray of Space: 1999 on amazon.de, but it is of suspicious quality. I Presume it's 3D is as good as HD of UFO blu rays that could have been bought at the same place previously, meaning it is non-existent, and I do not have intention to try it out. All the best, Branko P.S. If anybody has UFO blu rays from Germany (Marc, looking meaningfully at you :), can you please confirm if the encoding and compression are any better then on the DVD's if resolution isn't? Thanks! Thanks! The German UFO Blu-ray discs encoding & compression are exactly the same as if they were from a DVD -- that is, they use MPEG-2 compression and the episode file sizes are around 2GB each. Movies that are being currently released in 3D, were filmed in traditional
2D and converted to 3D. I also have a 3D converter that does a decent job of converting 2d to 3d. Thanks Marc!
Knowing it wasn't HD and it was an old transfer (which was more than decent), I was hoping that maybe the encoding and compression would use the benefits of the format, but it seems they just copied existing DVD's to blu ray. Blu Ray is quite a nice medium for standard definition content - can get a whole TV series on one disk. But given that it's most often used for HD material, it can certainly be misleading. I'd hope that it's plainly marked on the packaging as being standard definition? I only have volume 1 of the German UFO Blu-ray, and of course most of the text is in German, but I see no indication that the content is SD or HD. And to make matters worse, there are two false statements on the packaging -- "16:9" and "WIDESCREEN". Marc |
