Oh I remember staying up and watching those  first steps on the moon, and drinking Benedictine liqueur  to toast Neil Armstrong. I still have the original newspapers from that day.

The hopes we had. The future dreams, the expectations  for 1980. Cars with gullwing doors, Moonbases and purple wigs. And UFO was there, showing us such possibilities for the  future.

Maybe one day though, although it is more likely that we will go to Mars next.

(and Scott, I  LOVE your signature...'I study Nuclear Science, I love my classes, I got a crazy teacher who wears dark glasses...... Timbuk3..??).

LtCdr.. who teaches Science - amongst other things.

Re: Speaking of Moonbase...

Mark
Definitely a defining moment for our generation because I remember being in the last year  of infant school  i.e 7 yrs old and sitting with the whole school in the assembly hall to watch it on a b/w telly.
It was a taken as a given back then that we would have been able to go on holiday to the moon by now!....... it's still a total disappointment to me.

I was only five for the first moon landing but in those days there seemed to be rocket launches all the time. My mother told me I could count from five to one before I could count from one to five!

But, to me, if we had rockets then it made total sense to send one to the moon so it just seemed like a natural step to take.

The later moon missions made more of an impression as the TV quality improved. Apollo 17 with Cernan and Schmitt still impresses even today.

I recall looking at the moon in those days and thinking 'there are people up there'.

It would have been nice to have an actual moonbase but we are some way off that. The cost would be in the trillions and science-wise the Mars Rover missions seem better value for money.

What we need is a good reason to build one. If a little green man had popped up when the Viking Landers reached Mars in 1976 we would be there now.

Thankfully we never did build those moonbases with the wack jobs running this show I would not have wanted our planet policed by Ballistic missles from the moon See the begining of 5 million years to earth to see what I mean I still think Quatermass laid the foundation for SHADO after the Hobbs End incident

When one looks back, it seems truly unbelievable that as a boy I watched Man land on the Moon, drive his car there and play golf.

However, much as I love UFO, I have no desire that red suited aliens will visit us and harvest my organs. My daughter is now a medical student and I've heard enough gory stories to that effect.
