Straker's car

teresa.cerana
Straker's car is mentioned in yesterday's The Sunday Times:

Driving
Jeremy Clarkson
"Leaves all fashionable pretenders in its wake"

Here's the paragraph:

quote
Not a Jaguar, though, because somehow Jag has emerged from its recent
vacillations as the Tory party. A bit crusty. A bit stuck. A bit in need of
Peter Kay to come along and do an Amarillo on it. And not a Discovery either
because this hasn't worked at all. Maybe because it's cool to be green -
there has to be some reason why environmentalism is so popular because it's
got damn all to do with science - school-run mums are unwilling to tool
around in a Commander Straker Tonka toy.

I've always thought "Tonka toy" was shorthand for "sporty" 4x4s -
which, to be pedantic, wasn't wot Straker drove. But anyway...

Here's a link to the full article if anyone would like to read it. I
think the majority of people on this list don't live in the UK and
therefore will not be aware that Jeremy Clarkson is, I suppose, a UK
socio / cultural icon. (ROTFL) He writes on / presents tv programs
on cars and motoring though he branches out with more contemporary...
rants?... occasionally. He's provocative, extremely tongue-in-cheek
and (depending on your sense of humour) very funny. He has no time
for the "ecologically-correct" and recently received a banoffi pie in
his face for his views. I've explained all this so people who don't
know the Clarkson literary style will understand that his favoured
style of writing is to poke fun at more or less anything and is
probably stuffed so full of UK social / cultural references as to
make parts of it incomprehensible.

My view? Clarkson mentioned Straker. Wow! Seriously kewl!

Hi Carly,
thanks for the various - and helpful - explanations for us non-British!
Cheers, teresa

Actually, Tonka Toys are usually trucks and dirt
moving equipment that a full grown gorilla can stand
on and hurt its foot rather kill the toy ... no, not
the commander's vehicle was a tank ... personally,
this mom would love to drive the commander's car ...
with or without the addition of said commander ......
