I know Straker often looks tough and impatient, but I was struck recently
by his softer side. I just happened to watch 4 eps out of order and noticed a theme. First, in the Long Sleep, Ed is against Foster's idea of using the drug, but then insists on injecting her himself rather than letting Foster do it- his wistful;(??) look at foster shows IMHO a concern for Paul as a friend- maybe he knows he couldn't handle the emotional pressure as well as himself? Then i saw in TimeLAsh (my fav ep.) the very soft affectionate way Straker strokes Col Lake's face and hair after she's been attacked on the roof. He is certainly not tough and professional there- quite touching really <sniff, quickly puts hanky away>. Straker's face shows his compassion (and something more) for Lake quite clearly. Then in Kill Straker, the gentle and angsty way Straker trys to console Foster after the battle in the armory is also touching. He displays a sense of having to do the tough thing to save paul's life, but really being quite pained by it all. His body language reeks gentleness and angst- what fantastic acting!! Then the famous Straker talk with Gay Ellis on Moonbase- I really think in context of above he was being just a bit fatherly mixed with maybe some friendly (non-sexual) feeling for Gay but with Straker being uncomfortable with how to express it. He seems tentative rather than paternalistic or sleezy. Just my impression anyway after the 3 eps above.
