Even if the UFOs suddenly did stop, I don't think they'd cancel the whole
operation. i mean, they now have proof that there are aliens out there and
that not all of them are friendly. They don't know if the aliens had
friends, allies, or if they were just calling off their attacks to get ready
for the big assault - a few decades might not seem such a long time to them,
if they are artificially lengthening their own lives. They could disappear
for a while then turn up again. Thing is, the world could never be sure.
And, having been attacked once, like over the 1970s to 80s by these aliens,
Earth wouldn't want to leave herself vulnerable, even if the immediate
threat was gone. There'd still be a job for SID and Moonbase at least,
keeping watch on outer space.
I'm sure someone as inherently suspicious as Straker would work that out,
and wouldn't want to stand down all of his defences. So he'd still have his
little grotto under the studios, but would probably have more time to sit
staring at his paperweight.
