Sarah referred to a couple of irregularities in the plot.

I think its quite true that more than one person could have used the escape hatch,but I agree with Brianon this and I think most of the audience would assume that there is only room for one person.
As regards opeing the inner hatch door,again I would agree with Brian about shorting the lights,and other live support (what there was) systems.Also is the fact that the door might only open when drained off water.Logically speaking (from the audiences point of view) who are caught up in the plight of the characters,it probably would'nt make sense to be cold and wet on top of being frightened and physically weak.
Actually I think the ending is very good.A similar ending was used by Hitchcock in North by Northwest,so what is good enough for the master.It expresses the emotional relief in one straightforward cut.That is what I think was intended.
