Survival concerns

In the episode "Survival" when the Alien helps Paul Foster by
connecting some sort of tubing to the suit, he puts the sealant goo
on the outside instead of the inside.
(maybe some advanced Alien technology, but I wouldn't be too
confident wearing a space suit with that sort of seal)

I've always assumed that it was oxygen, used to oxygenate the
green liquid that the aliens breathe.
