Have gradually been working my way through the box sets since getting theselast year.
Whilst I had previously watched all of the UFO episodes at least once in one form or another, and have been rewatching the DVD episodes more or less in order, I jumped to watching 'The Sound of Silence' this weekend just gone. This was I believe the earliest episode I recall seeing at the time of the original UK transmissions. My first knowledge that such a cracking series existed actually came from the UFO strips in the 'Countdown' comic. I recall with deep frustration thatit seemed to be ages before the series was transmitted in London. This wascompounded by the fact that when one looked at the regional variation TV listings on a Saturday, episode after episode of UFO seemed to slip by, being shown it appeared in every ITV area except London. I'm therefore fairly sure TSOS was the first episode I saw, when I spent a weekend away with my Aunt, in what was then the Southern TV area, prior to the London transmissions. I know from earlier discussions that this episode does not rate highly in the UFO canon for others, yet for me it works very well as a suspense thriller, at least until near the end. The closing portion would have benefited in my opinion with some gratuitous shots of Michael Jayston coughing up green fluid as he is removed from the canister. And of course there's Susan Jameson, looking really superb. I recall her emergence around that time in the series 'Take Three Girls', very much of it's liberating times (not that as a 12 year old, I was often allowed to stay up and watch it). I've enjoyed watching Susan Jameson in many series over the years, particularly in 'When the Boat Comes In' and currently as Alun Armstrong's wife in 'New Tricks'. However I particularly remember her from a horrific episode of 'Space 1999', where she is sucked up by the bug eyed monster on the abandoned spaceship, and her smoking decayed body is spat out moments later. In TSOS though, I'm intrigued by her red leather / PVC dress she wears nearthe end. Isn't this the same dress worn by Deborah Grant in 'Psychobombs' and the unnamed starlet in 'Timelash'? |

I can't recall what Colin Gordon wore in The cat with Ten Lives, but that dress is memorable. Must be something about the colour red I guess... |

Interesting thoughts on "The Sound Of Silence" Dave. It certainly has its merits and is quite unusual in its style but not one of my favourites. I find it rather slow but my opinion is heavily coloured by what I see as the senseless and disturbing scene with Culley's dog. I just don't understand this. I had wondered if the dog were just meant to be injured but later Pa Stone specifically referred to it having been "mutilated". Quite why the aliens would do this I do not know. Some of the other scenes are dark and as yousay it is quite suspenseful. There is talk of some episodes of UFO being controversial in their content but this one is never discussed. Perhaps it slipped under the radar as it were but it does seem it was broadcast in someareas in the "family viewing" timeslots.
Although it started the second block "Sound Of Silence" doesn't see the aliens taking the radical measures of later episodes. However the dark writingand direction perhaps suggests the producers were on the brink of more daring things. Alan PS I think everyone agrees that Susan Jameson's red dress is one of the hits of that episode. It does return with Deborah Grant in "The Psychobombs" and the starlet in "Timelash" but definitely suits Susan the best! --- On Wed, 8/4/09, Dave_Copley <[hidden email]> wrote: From: Dave_Copley <[hidden email]> Subject: [SHADO] The Sound of Silence - Early memories To: [hidden email] Date: Wednesday, 8 April, 2009, 10:40 PM Have gradually been working my way through the box sets since getting theselast year. Agreed, Marc! IMO, it looks better on both Deborah Grant AND the starletin Timelash. But everyone has their own opinions. : )

A comparison with Lt Ellis'soutfits is necessary to see if my own theory about the colour is correct or not. Someone has to volunteer to obtain excessive detail about Jane Merrow's green dress in The Responsibility Seat and test the effect on memory ofit being there and then not being. After that and careful examination of the data pertaining to Ayesha and sustained observation of every other female operative at SHADO HQ and SkyDiver we might be...halfway there. SHADO certainly hired the most aesthetically pleasing females ;)
