The message about photos of the convention reminded me: recently
there has been orc-talk around about Yahoo cutting down each email group's allowed file size from 20 megabytes to 5 megabytes unless Yahoo are paid by that group's members and/or manager. And a limit on bulk of messages per month. |

Well, I wouldn't worry about that... this list will survive one way or another -- either I'll pay for whatever's needed, or we'll move the list somewhere else. As for the limit on the filesize, I suspect that most of the 18 megabytes in the files area are old files which are rarely accessed anymore, and could either be moved to a website or deleted. As for the pay options, just show me the one where I can remove all of the excessive advertising which shows up while accessing SHADO via the website! That's the one I want! :-) Marc |
Why not create a yahoo "Briefcase" and put all the old files in there.
You can share them out to members of the SHADO group. Well that's interesting... so everyone in this group would have their own 30 mb of storage space for free? What's the catch? :-) Marc |

All:
Yahoo!Groups is currently running a survey. If you go to the main page at: http://groups.yahoo.com you will find a link to the survey. The survey, which is long, covers some of the ideas that Yahoo! has for a 'premium' level -- including paying to remove ads. Once the survey is done, I am sure they will roll out the premium service. Toward the end of the survey, they present different scenarios, one of them being the 'free' (ad-supported) version of Yahoo!Groups. This will have 5MB of file space and allow a certain amount of traffic bandwidth. I think that it will be more than enough to support the current SHADO discussion list. (Since ours is a text based group -- the image based groups will be hit harder) Most of the options were centered around the list owner paying the fee so group membership would remain free. There was an option for indivdual members to pay to remove ads (IIRC). I'd recommend all SHADO members take the survey -- but be forewarned, it's an indepth survey -- it will take a good 15 minutes or so to go thru it. As for moving the list to another site -- there are fewer free ones and it's my feeling that Yahoo!Groups is one of the more popular of the ones left. I'm sure the list has picked up members that did a search on Yahoo!Groups rather than come in soley via Marc's Web site. As for the briefcase idea, you can do that -- but then you have to remember which briefcase had which item. I don't think there's anything in any of the archives that won't fit into 5MB and/or can't be rotated on an orderly basis to give everyone a chance to post their stuff. That's for sure! I started doing this survey, but when it became clear that it was a LONNNNNNG survey, I abandoned it. >Most of the options were centered around the list owner paying the >fee so group membership would remain free. There was an option for >indivdual members to pay to remove ads (IIRC). Depending on the options & prices, I suspect I will lean towards paying (myself) to have the ads removed for everyone. I did this once before when this list was on eGroups. People shouldn't be bothered because of my having to pay for this, because, truth be told, my "UFO Series Home Page" has been earning a fair amount of money in the past year due to associate links to Blackstar.com and Amazon.com (mostly Blackstar). Basically what happens is that if someone buys one of the UFO/Gerry Anderson DVDs after visiting these sites via my website, then they credit me with 4-5% of the purchase price. I began doing this when Yahoo raised the price of my webhosting from $10/month to $40/month (it's now back down to $30/month). In the beginning, these links just barely covered the increased cost, but lately with the release of UFO and Space:1999 DVD's, I've been taking in more money than I'm spending, so taking some of that and putting it towards the discussion group seems like a good idea.
