Thunderbirds DVD's, best out yet

scott pennington
I just got the first set of Thunderbirds DVD's and though I have
never been in to the show, I must say WOW! The surround sound
effects are really superb, they did a wonderful job. The video is as
expected, top notch transfer, but I had no idea that the sound would
be comprable to big screen SS movies. I also have purchased the
Space 1999 sets, and must admit the job done on the Thunderbirds is
far superior, it makes one wish they had done the same with 1999. I
only hope they do something along these lines with the UFO's if and
when they are released on DVD. Im not holding my breath however,
Thunderbirds is of course far more popular amongst the masses then
UFO, though I of course prefer 1999.

Did they improve upon the original?
I guess when UFO comes out on DVD (or IF) I had better get one of them DVD
thingies. Are DVDs the final standard, or is buying a DVD drive a waste of
money? And what do the things cost? I'm not talking about a DVD player
(stupid to buy one if one has no intention of buying DVDs, except for, of
course, UFO) but a DVD recorder/player. If one can use a DVD thing the same
way one uses a video recorder/player, it would be handy. So much stuff on
TV one can watch, buying or renting movies seem a waste of time. (Recording
movies does not, maybe Patrick and I would finally see the end of a movie
rather than fall asleep half-way through :-)
Any idea as to the cost of a DVD recorder/player these days, and of blank
DVDs? (The kind of DVD thingie for a computer, not for TV)

Well I was reading in 'DVD' magazine that the Space 1999 DVD
release which is due next month has a commentary by Sylvia
Anderson as one of the customisable special features - was
surprised about that as I'd imagined that GA would have
found some way to prevent it.

The two feature length TB cinema films are both due out soon
too.

The original soundtrack was left mostly unmolested except for
a few explosions and stereo sound effects - which for me anyway,
do enhance the listening experience. They don't have an
intrusive, superimoposed quality or anything like that.

No and no! There can't possibly ever be a 'final standard',
something else will take over eventually - no doubt offering
even higher picture definition and capacity, perhaps even a
smaller medium. But it's well enough established now that
it's well worth the investment in my opinion - in the UK you can
get DVD players for less than 150 pounds now, and they are even
cheaper in Hong Kong and Tokyo. I'm sure that films and TV
series will continue to be released on DVD for years, probably
years after the next video standard medium is introduced,
just as VHS tapes are still made today.

I have been speaking to someone 'in the know' and the release of UFO on
DVD has been confirmed for this time next year.

That's good to hear Adrian!

I'm assuming from your e-mail address that when you were speaking of
a DVD release for UFO, you were referring to the UK, and not America?

Agree with all said here. And yes Lieve they do make them in
recorder format but they are still super expensive, the recorders
that is, but like CD recorders, I should think/hope the price on
those will come down soon as well. Also, James is right about the
new sound effects not being intrusive, they just enhance an already
fun experience but boy oh boy, if you have a surround sound system it
really is neat!
