HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - "Star Trek" veteran Jonathan Frakes is set to direct a
live-action feature version of "Thunderbirds," a cult British TV series that
used puppets and models in a process dubbed "supermarionation."
The 1960s series revolved around a top-secret international rescue team
comprised of retired astronaut Jeff Tracy and his five sons. Assisting the
family was their London agent, Lady Penelope, her Cockney ex-convict driver,
Parker, and the Tracys' houseguest, Brains.
The Universal Pictures project is aiming for an early 2003 start.
British producer Working Title has been developing the film for many years,
originally for Peter Hewitt to direct. It recently took "Thunderbirds" back to
the drawing board to reconceive it as a family film -- reflecting the original
TV series' core audience of kids under 10 -- instead of as an adult actioner.
Frakes, best known for playing Commander William Riker on TV series "Star
Trek: The Next Generation," directed and co-starred in "Star Trek:
Insurrection" and "Star Trek: First Contact." He most recently directed the
Paramount children's adventure "Clockstoppers."
The American Cinematheque will pay tribute to "Thunderbirds"
creator/producer/writer Gerry Anderson on Aug. 24. Anderson will attend a
screening of a "Thunderbirds" episode at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood,
and take part in a discussion afterwards.
