Nick-I DO appreciate the information you gave me and don't want to
sound rude. That's my natural tendency. Ask anyone who knows me. I apologise if I sounded too rough around the edges, when all you were trying to do was offer some advice. Jim |
Yes copyright discussion always seem to go in the same direction no matter
what email list your on. It's one of the natural "laws" of the internet, whether it be a mailing list or Usenet. As for Jim, he really is a good natured and nice guy as I met him last month. But be warned, he is from the east coast of the USA and us eastcoast native types are all rough around the edges! : -) Now, if only Jim was from New Jersey then THAT would explain everything! (captphil waits for the flames to come realizing he has once again brought this upon himself!) : -) Just kidding! I'm going to Main Mission 2000 September 1 - 3! http://www.cybrary1999.com/con2000/ -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] <[hidden email]> Date: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 6:45 AM Subject: To Nick >Nick-I DO appreciate the information you gave me and don't want to >sound rude. Thanks Jim, Marc and Phil.
Sadly, the internet seems to imbibe users with a "I can, therefore I will" mentality, without little apparent thought for whether "I should". I consider c***r***t important. The c***r***t owner has paid money for something, and I think they deserve the common decency of being asked how/when/if it should be used. Perhaps the easiest way for me to think about it would be if I bought a really nice car, but because someone (in this case Jim) liked it so much he just felt he could drive it, change the colour, add fuzzy dice etc. It doesn't work like that, whether you really, really, like something or not. It belongs to somebody else, and I just think that the rights of the owner should be respected. Anyway, rant over, 'cos it really won't change much. I'm going along to MainMission:2000 too, so if anyone wants to make themselves known I'd love to meet you (and I promise not to rant too much!!) |

I personally totally support your point of view, and I think that it's a great shame that so many people who would never make a habit of selling goods stolen from a shop think it's fine to take money for other peoples' copyright material. I don't think the issue of Fan clubs is quite so black & white - like Jim says, they help in promoting the series to which they are dedicated, but I think at the very least the copyright owners should be approached to give the nod. They'd probably be very supportive, and if not that's unfortunate, but it's also their right. But I must say, people offering for sale CD copies of music without permission are very obviously abusing the rights of the copyright owners, whether they make a profit or not - especially when legitimate copies are available, albeit in very subtly different form. > Anyway, rant over, 'cos it really won't change much. > Me too. I just wanted to voice my support. James |

It just so happens I'll be at the Main Mission 2000 con also and I'll
be glad to meet with you! Do you have a dealers table? Will you be bringing any Fanderson related items for sale? And,if not, can I get you to bring any UFO related material to the show? Pam Barnes used to sell me a ton of stuff at shows. Let me know what you might have available. As to my club, I'm giving it a lot more thought now and will probably not make a go of it after all, unless I get an okay from Carlton (wasn't that the name of Will Smith's brother on "Fresh Prince?") > Do you have a dealers table? Will you be bringing any Fanderson related items for sale? Sorry Jim, but no. It's a holiday more than anything, although I have been asked to do a short presentation about the club, and to bring some episodes over for the screening programmes. I am, however, more than happy to chat to ayone about the club during the event. > And,if not, can I get you to bring any UFO related material to the > show? Pam Barnes used to sell me a ton of stuff at shows. Way back in the mists of time, before I was even a member of Fanderson, let alone on the committee, the club was given tons of photos and promotional material by ITC. Allegedly, someone in a position of responsibility within the club (and I'll mention no names so as not to be confronted with a law suit) took all of thse materials with him/her when he/she left the committee. After a short while they were being sold at comic marts, conventions and fairs around the world by this person. Now, this information has been passed to me second hand by a number of people, but I thing that's a pretty shitty thing to do? All merchandise that we have is currently detailed in our Fanderson Sales brochure, and on our website. Other materials the club has been given by ITC/PolyGram/Carlton will be given to the club's members, offered as competition prizes, or auctioned for charity, at our Century 21 convention this October. Again, perhaps too altruistic for some, but we just don't believe that we, as individuals, should gain from ITC/PolyGram/Carlton's generosity. It's a club, and all members have an opportunity of sharing in that. |
