Maybe a new version of UFO - be it movie, cartoon
series or comic - should be set in a world that looks
very much like our present but there is no reference
to any particular year.
This device has been employed very successfully in
many recent genre movies. Look at the Batman movies,
in particular the first two ... it is recognisable as
the present but in places it is more hi-tech whilst in
others, the producation design echoes a bygone era.
The same goes for The Avengers, both the movie & the
60s series ... the movie is supposed to be set in 1999
but it is a 1999 seen through the eyes of the 1960s.
The same goes for Mars Attacks!, that even has the
white 'bubble' chairs that wouldn't go amiss in an
episode of UFO! We also see these chairs in movies
like Men In Black which essentially is UFO done as a
sci-fi comedy in my opinion.
The forthcoming Thunderbirds movie I believe is set in
2020 (I may be wrong) & again, from what I've seen of
the production stills, it represents the 21st Century
seen through the eyes of the 1960s.
One of the flaws with UFO is that it was set in the
year 1980, it should have been set further in the
future in my opinion, I always think of it being set
in the year 2080 in keeping with Anderson tradition of
series being set 100 years after their initial
transmission date (Yes, I know UFO was made in 1970!).
We have to think of UFO as science-fiction and not try
and tie it in with events in the real world. They are
trying to do this with Enterprise as there were
mentions of the Eugenics War - which was supposed to
take place in the 1990s - in the 60s series. Now,
because Enterprise is set in the mid-21st Century &
the makers are so keen on it being the future of our
present they are trying to find ways of not mentioning
the Eugenics War.
