UFO Book Problems at Amazon UK

croprobe
I have recently ordered Chris Bentley's UFO book from
Amazon UK. Two things I noticed on my account:

1. They have charged me an extra GBP1.99 because the book
is classified as "hard to find".
2. They have quoted a long wait for this book with the
following added "(but may not be available at all)".

I have sent them an email drawing their attention to the fact
the book has just been released and suggesting they remove the
surcharge from my total if they have just received stock.
I'd say this surcharge has been applied by their computer as
it has not yet been updated, but just something to look out
for if ordering from Amazon UK. I'll let you know the outcome.

Amazon seems to frequently have glaring errors in their
descriptions of items during pre-release. Usually they
fix them when they receive the book in stock. Although
not always -- I purchased the Gerry Anderson biography
from them recently, and their website said that it would
typically take 3-4 weeks to arrive. It arrived in less
than a week -- and that was from the UK to the USA!

Amazon often have the same problems which all book suppliers have which is
that the database from which they take their pre-publication information is
often very incorrect. This is because the publishers supply the information
months in advance of publication and frequently forget to correct it.

The difference between Amazon and other book sellers is that Amazon chose to
use an automatic upload of this information without further checking simply
because of the sheer volume of business. Other book sellers will not
advertise material on their web sites until they are sure of their
information.

I use the same pre-publication databases as I am a librarian and we put in
orders for books months in advance of publication. We have all of the same
problems and waste alot of staff time.
