Certainly the art for the up coming UFO comic is astonishing. It also looks and feels about right. Not bad dialogue either.
What is more of a worry is the intention to leap frog twenty years after issue 0 and probably change everything so that it becomes unrecognisable from what we know UFO to be. Why can,t the makers simply stay within the same time frame as issue 0 and use their imagination and intelligence to devise interesting stories. There is no law stating that comics have to thrust out past the boundary markers just because they can.It also risks alienating the original fans of the series. When I was a boy reading Countdown I scorned it for doing exactly that.I,m afraid I don't go along with the obsessive compulsion to evolve a subject in this way. Of course,it is possible to update UFO without having anything like an evolution.I think the idea is encapsulated in the concept of updating UFO without in fact updating it. If the makers of the comic keep that in mind then it maybe everything that I wanted Countdown to be...fingers crossed. Mark UK [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

OK, brief answer. Basically we didn't want to have to keep the stories in the 1980s, when the series took place, and have to constantly trip over historical details and whatnot. I personally think you'll enjoy what Anthony Taylor and the rest of the merry crew have in mind for UFO. Michael (P.S. Well - there's no law stating that they can't, either :P This is quite a common phenomenon with adaptations of TV series in other media - I think the general philosophy is that comic strips, audio presentations (such as the Big Finish Dr Who CDs) or whatever provide an opportunity to extend and explore ideas outside the existing canon. |

I write almost all my UFO fan fiction in the here and now - i.e. ca 2000 and
up. I've had no probs converting original characters and ideas to a modern time frame and I can't see the comic makers having any probs either. They could even occasionally do flashback episodes which explain present problems in terms of what happened in the 1980's. My fan fic runs from 1972 (when SHADO was just getting under way) to 2005, plus I've added new characters because you can't always have our original intrepid heroes doing young guy stuff when they are in their 50's and 60's (TOS excepted here of course, ha ha!). I'm also creating some strong female characters who work for SHADO as I felt there were times when the original UFO overlooked their 4 strongest females at times (Lake, Barry, Ellis and Harrington). And a valid point. What alterations occur I don't see so much as being changes as I do logical updates. Keep in mind that Misc!MAYHEM is approaching UFO from the viewpoint of people who appreciate the series as much as you do. I think you'll find the results exciting.
