Hi all,
Thanks to everyone who's participated in my "UFO DVD Special Features Poll"! However, the response has been less than I had hoped for. We have over 300 people on this mailing list, yet it appears that only about 25 people have participated in the poll. So, does this mean that most of you don't care about special features on the UFO DVDs? Or simply that most of you aren't interested in participating in polls? For those of you who care but forgot or haven't gotten around to participating in the poll, there's still time to let you opinions be known. Here is a link to the poll. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/surveys?id=863255 Thanks! Marc |
The reason I did not reply to the poll is I do not own either a DVD player
or Video cassette recorder. Tim Newman-Smith |

Thanks to you!
BTW (pls forgive if this question has already been answered) will the UFO DVD's include English-language subtitles? Thought I'd respond to the final poll results. I'm more interested in things
being included on the DVDs that you can't get elsewhere. Things like character biogs and even writer guides dont really interest me. I'd much rather have commentaries, music scores, trailers etc - things that are original and (probably) more expensive/difficult to acquire. Dare I say it that anyone can knock up a character biog and they don't do anything for me. I'll be interested to see what actually turns up on the discs. I doubt that it will be up to the standard of the extra material on the BBC Doctor Who discs - but then with 3-4 eps on a disc what can we expect?! |

As one of the non-responders, I'd have to say it's because I don't much care about "extras" on DVDs. I'll respond to polls if I have a definite preference among the choices, but here I really don't. I may buy the DVDs when they come out; it'll depend on things like price, whether the video quality is substantially better than the tapes, and whether I get around to ordering them. In any case, however, "extras" aren't going to be a factor in whether I buy the DVDs, and I'm not likely to pay attention to them. - Lisa |

However, if we look at the past releases of THE PRISONER, SPACE:1999 and assume that UFO will be the same, then I think we can predict that: * the UK DVDs will have the option of having English subtitles * the USA DVDs will *not* have this option, nor will they be closed-captioned for the hard-of-hearing Marc |

Ummmmmmmm, I've heard someone mention this before .... forgive my ignorance, but wasn't UFO made in English to begin with? Why would it need English sub-titles? << Out of curiousity, do you still listen to 8 track tapes? AT >> Hey! What's wrong with 8-Track?! Andy wrote: << So you should buy this box of DVDs, even if you don't have a way of viewing them ? And can't afford them, let alone a player for them ? >> Not if you can't afford them, no! But Marc is saying, if you plan on getting a DVD player *someday* and CAN afford the DVDs when they come out, and think you may want the DVDs when you do get a DVD player, then you should get the DVDs when they come out or risk not being able to find them when you DO want them later on. Andy again: << Interesting. VCRs that play both PAL and NTSC videos have been available in the UK for several years, at the lower end of the price scale (even the lowest priced I've seen recently, at £75.00 - about $100 - would play both PAL and NTSC videos. So anyone in north America who could get hold of PAL videos - on eBay for example - really shouldn't have a problem playing them. Unless of course, north American consumers are being happily led down the garden path... but surely not...) >> Well, I'm not sure what you mean by being led down the garden path, but I know I have not seen any VCRs that play both NTSC and PAL in my local stores. I have not been to any electonic specialty stores, so I can't say how available they are there. Right now, I'm like you - I can't even afford a new VCR now that mine is going wonky, let alone a DVD player, but I will probably - no, I will DEFINITELY get a DVD player some day because the picture quality os so much better (and I already own several DVDs - that I can't watch). << But at the risk of repeating myself - people who dont have, and can't afford, DVD players, can't buy DVDs. End of story, enuff said. Retreat to lurking. >> Not strickly true - I can't afford $200.00 for a DVD player, but I have spent $10 or $15 for DVDs. (I actually spent waaaaaaaaay more for my limited edition 2-disc Army of Darkness DVD set, but that's my favourite movie and it's Bruce, after all - and yes, my other 2 DVDs are Bruce movies too ...) Ah, Lisa confirmed my fears about multi-format VCRs when she wrote: << Um, Andy, the happy state of affairs in the UK reference low-priced multi-format VCRs most emphatically does *not* apply in the US. I know; I have one, and tracking it down and getting hold of it was quite an adventure in itself. The usual response at any US retailer when I asked about VCRs capable of playing PAL tapes was "Huh?" (Most people in the US aren't even aware there *are* different formats.) I eventually found information on the two (2) models available at the time; one was intended for professional use and had a four-figure price tag; the other -- which I bought -- was about $500. Last I looked, its successor was still the only model readily available here, was still around $500, and was still not all that easy to find. I have a bunch of PAL tapes and the VCR I bought has been well worth it for my frame-capture work, but a multi-format VCR really isn't a viable option for most people in the US. >> <siiiiiiiiigh> Everything sounds so complicated - I don't think I'll ever be able to watch PAL videos OR DVDs. -- Yuchtar, who was the SECOND person to answer the poll (presumably after Marc) :-) -- =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Yuchtar zantai-Klaan | [hidden email] I am not a number! It is a pity if people cannot appreciate the episodes fully because they can't hear the soundtrack. What we need is an electronic box that can shrink the TV picture a bit and make subtitles run along the resulting space at the bottom without clashing with picture detail. That would be cheaper than making new tapes of all 26 episodes for every subtitled version. |

Hi All!
When I tried to participate in the Poll, I received Yahoo page that asked me for some passwords so I gave up my participation. Sorry. All the best, Brako _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. |

Just for us not-native English-speaking people... I'm sure I won't have prbls in understanding both Ed Bishop and Mike Billington, but subtitles would be a nice option to me... Bye. t. |

If some sort of video player had an option of adding subtitles from a separate memory, then e.g. a German language subtitle package for UFO would take up much less memory space than a (complete extra set of 26 UFO episodes dubbed into German) and likely could be downloaded from the WWW. |

Thus, you would include them in English for English speaking deaf persons. The lack of such closed-captioning was brought home by a deaf gentlemen on the Space:1999 list who for years has only been able to follow the series via actions, etc. and not dialogue. Imagine the disappointment when the DVDs didn't include CC. |

Thanks, atd1999, for your info! I've always asked myself what "closed captioned" meant (for English isn't my native language). At last the riddle is solved :-) Again, my thanks! Christian |

I have, upon occasion, turned on the CC on videos when I've had trouble understanding the dialog and it has always worked whenever I've tried it, so I thought all videos had it! <shaking head> I know, I'm clueless.
