>Do you know something that the rest of us don't?
No I,ve no insider info.Just that Gerry Anderson was excited about Granada Ventures involvement with his series. They had always looked upon them very favourably. >Space:1999 is undergoing remastering and restoration, and >they are also making an HDTV transfer for possible future >release, but they will be releasing it in the UK and >Australia in normal definition later this year. >And there are no plans that I know of to re-release UFO >in the UK that I know of. This is news to me...and what I think it means is that SPACE 1999 is surely to be released on sell through on HD-DVD when it officially launches later this year.Is this coincidence? And does it bode well for UFO? New Captain Scarlet also has HD masters being prepared (although I understand that may have nothing to do with Granada Ventures) >Maybe so, but the series wasn't really designed to be >seen at these higher resolutions -- and what do you do >about the widescreen aspect ratio of HDTV? Chop off >the top and the bottom of the screen? >Nope, I think this past DVD release is as good as its >going to get. But then again, I said that about the >Japanese laserdiscs back in 1992... :-) I don't know about that. Was,nt UFO released at the cinema in Italy? I think the only scenes that might be compromised are the model shots, but then again some of the high def photos of these look superb. You can't see any strings! Even on ordinary TV some of the backgrounds looked little false.I doubt whether they would look even more false in HD. As to the cut off on widescreens. Will this stop HD-DVD transfers of films made before 1953 (when all films were made in 4x3) If your a purest watch in 4x3.Otherwise zoom -in and fill the screen (heaven forbid). Naturally I'm taking a very positive stance. Mark UK [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

The Space:1999 DVD releases were *not* remastered when they were released on DVD several years ago. They used the same masters that were used on the American laserdiscs from the early 1990s. As such, many fans complained when they saw that UFO, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90, Secret Service were remastered and Space:1999 was not. I don't even think the Space:1999 DVDs were taken from a 35mm source -- compare that to UFO, which I believe was taken from the original 35mm negatives! So this is essentially a case of bringing Space:1999 up the quality levels that UFO already has been released with. Marc |
