HDTV and HD capable displays are already here and selling (Plasma and LCD) It is well known that ordinary broadcasts look awful on Plasma and LCD.This is simply because they are not meant or designed to show those kinds of images. Hidef is what they are meant for.Watch an ordinary DVD on a Plasma screen properly connected in progressive scan to see the transformation. The displays in shops are notoriously badly done.Watch the UFO DVD's on your computer screen and see how much more alive (better textured) the images become.HD-DVD will have 3-6 times more resolution, with still more to come. People go to Cinema because the experience is that much better. This is surely connected to image quality. When ordinary people see what they have been missing, HDTV HD-DVD will almost certainly become the norm. Whats more ordinary DVD's will play in HD-DVD drives and players and the picture will look better. Mark UK [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

In the vinyl era open reel [reel-to-reel] players sonic quality was well in advance of the that slab of black vinyl. Reel players had a small but veracious market but the sales never matched that of the record and the catalogue in comparison to what was available in vinyl was extremely limited - the same will apply to HDTV. There are two issues as I see it: a) Whilst HDTV may be able to get a bit more out of the 35mm originals - if we are being absolutely honest all it will really do [as the DVD's did to some extent] is highlight and make more apparent the limitations of the original production - as Marc pointed out in a early post. b) There is also the law of diminishing returns - whilst it may be possible to improve on the DVD quality quite honestly your average punter will probably not notice or more importantly not care. If UFO has been licensed to Network it won't be seen for a while as they will concentrate on getting out titles were percieved as not being properly remasterd were noticable improvement can be made.
