> Did we ever do a disscusion on The Psychobombs?
Sorry, for some reason I stopped reminding people to continue with the episode discussions. Perhaps it was the lack of participation? The last episode we did was THE SOUND OF SILENCE, so let's try to continue with the next episode on the list, THE CAT WITH TEN LIVES. Comments? I seem to be in the minority on this episode, as I like David Tomblin's funky style, the choice of guest cast, Dr. Jackson's funky Alien theories, and that big battle with the mobile rocket launchers in the beginning. Also this is the first episode with Virginia Lake as the second-in-command... that alone makes it a great episode! :-) Marc |
Hi All :)
Episode: The Cat with Ten Lives. Okay, this is going to sound very negative, but TCWTL is my least favourite episode... It doesn't bear any kind of scrutiny, and indeed many aspects of it contradict with earlier episodes, and indeed logic. The Seance scene - weird, unnecessary and non-UFO like, out of place... If the aliens are truly beings with no physical manifestations, and are capable of mentally inhabiting any sentient creature, it completely contradicts evidence from earlier episodes and conclusions that the aliens are a dying race, 'inherited sterility' and roaming the galaxy looking for a new planet with organs to transplant into their own. Why bother kidnapping humans, removing their organs at all, when they could have just inhabitant the body? No, it doesn't bear up, and shows lack of UFO understanding from the writer, and IMO sloppy logic. If the aliens were truly capable of some of the mind games and control as seen in this episode, then SHADO and the Earth would have been doomed from the start, as there would have been no defence from a race of true telepaths with awesome mind-control, as everything SHADO planned would have been foreseen, and then outmanoeuvred or side-stepped. Even in E.S.P. (one of my fav) the aliens use Croxley's inherent ESP to their own advantage, but it is clear that they are not capable of widespread and deep mind-reading, otherwise they would have been able top out-manoeuvre all of Straker's plans and indeed SHADO operations. No, in my opinion TCWTL is ill-conceived, and out-of-step with the rest of the series... I won't even mention the cat! My two cats go ape, every time those scenes appear.... (I have to turn down the sound), and my girlfriend was upset with me when I said UFO was my fav TV show ever, when she saw those cat scenes... I did say it was out-of-character for the series... what on earth (or otherwise) did they do to it, to make it make that noise? ..and one scene it is clearly being held upside-down and in distress... Oh, I did mention the cat... doh! Loads of other problems as well, but lack of time impinges here... The only good thing about the episode is that it show some background to some of the characters, Moonbase scenes, and how astronauts transmit to and from the Moon. Best, and apologies if I have stomped over some people favourite episode. Griff |
