A recent brief discussion on the possible finish to the model
used in the series may have left some with the impression that clear perspex was used to create the 15 fins used around the central cone structure of Derek Meddings sublime creation.
Having checked this extensively,I can confirm that these fins are completely covered with chrome tape.
It is only necessary to look at the photo of the original model used in the series on Marc Martins site to realise this.
A professional model makers version of the model (which I would agree is superbly constructed) featuring clear perspex is so obviously wrong,I feel almost embarassed to mention it.
May I suggest that any single photo that hints at a perspex finish is simply a trick of the light,a very beguilling quality of
chrome that gives an impression of something that it is,nt
For more proof simply check out the UFO DVD,s .If anyone still thinks that the fins are made from clear perspex after careful scrutiny,then either somethings wrong with my eyes or I rather immodestly know more about this model than anyone else.And while your about looking at the DVD,s check out THE MAN WHO CAME BACK.
One particular shot features a very big close up of a UFO in the foreground.Clearly this shows the fin structure at its closest.Its also very mis-leading because although it shows the fins being highly reflective,it also shows them to have a ribbed and hatched kind of pattern.This I believe is only featured on the larger version of the model.And one thing I will admit to is that I don,t know how this effect was acheived and what material might have been used.
This patterning is certainly very difficult to spot in other images of the larger model unless you are very close,whch makes me think in the final analysis its inclusion is not
critical.Certainly the other sizes of the UFO did not have this patterning on their fins,which instead were just covered with chrome tape.Please feel free to comment,because this has fascinated me for some considerable period of time.
