I have managed to find a company in Scotland (Dundee)called Ultratape that makes this tape.

I have e-mailed them in the hope they can supply direct to me in various lengths and sizes. You never know.

Thanks for the encouragement

UFO Model Metallic finish and Lunar Module

lunadude2001 <russell_smith@ntlworld.com>
Hello

I'm a first time "poster" on this NG. I'm generally intrigued by the
modelling discussions that appear from time to time. Like many others
on this group, UFO is partly responsible for my continuing interest
in
modelling today. It is my intention to build all the main craft from
the series, but I have other commitments that is making progress slow
- not least I have a commitment to build some craft from 2001, before
I can make a "real" start on UFO subjects. So I'm at the research
stage at the moment.

I have another option for what the metallic finish on the UFO could
be. There is a product called bare metal foil, it is self adhesive
mylar type foil finish. It has been around for a very long time. It
was often used in modelling articles in the '60's, The reknown Chris
Ellis book and the Airfix magazines spring to mind, I'm sure other
modelling publication 60's reported on it as well. The downside is,
it very hard to apply, particulary to compound surfaces, but if done
well it looks sensational. Run of the mill modellers of the time
probably would'nt have bothered as it was essentially an American
product and as far as I remember it was not widely imported into the
UK back then, particulary in the less global times of the 1960's.
However, I'm sure the aquistion would have not presented to much of a
problem to proffesional model-makers so that whats make me think it
may be Bare metal Foil. I'm not aware it came as tape, but it may
have
done, but the sheets could have easily been cut into strips. Bare
Metal Foil is still available today from www.bare-metal.com

Because of the difficulty in the application of the foil, If I was
going to build a UFO and this juncture, I'm not sure that's a route I
would persue. Modelling products have come on a little bit since the
hazy days of the 1960's. To get the a similar chrome styled finish.
Probably a far easier option would be to use a rub 'n buff paint
finish like SNJ Metal finish. The basic principle is to spray on a
base coat of silver paint, when dry apply a metal buffing compound,
buffing to the required finish. Although this is not a straight
forward as I suggest (you need a decent airbrush for starters) I
think it is somewhat easier than applying Bare Metal Foil.

I hope that helps.

While I'm on the subject of colour, has anyone got a precise colour
of the Lunar Module and Carrier. What photos I have, appear to be
contradictory. Watching the DVD's is a help but it is hard to
determine the precise colour, as the appearance varies according to
how the craft was lit. I would suspect that it may relate to a car
colour? Any one know what car colour it may be?

Cheers

Russell
