Since you brought up the new Star Trek movie... I have to admit I'm a trekkie from way back and had serious doubts about such a movie, but was pleasently surprised...which back to our topic of a UFO movie...The idea of new movie can certainly introduce new elements as long as they are well interwoven with those special things that made the old so special. (in the case ofStar Trek for example, it was one-liners that made the show so memorable).I think a new UFO movie could be successful, but it would have to take place in the current rather than the past, and therefore there would have to be some new parts and pieces to it. But given all the new digital imagery, it could work. I think if the writers were to try to keep all the old characters, etc. they would most certainly fail to capture our hearts...

As long as a good story is told, it matters little to me what it'll look like. However, the geek in me wants a little bit a cheese factor and nods to the old series.
I think that's why I enjoyed the new "Star Trek" movie... good story, little bit of cheese and homage to the original series, cartoons and movies.
