I'll try and explain the situation with the music as best I can.
The Fanderson Space 1999 CD releases were very limited; I think they pressed around 900 of each. This avoids having to pay musician re-use fees (like repeat fees for actors), as there's a cut off point, which might well be 1000. Fanderson had to negotiate with Zomba music who at that time owned the Barry Gray tapes from Space year 1. However, their releases were incomplete which is one one episode suite appears in mono. I'm going off the point here. The rights to the UFO music are seemingly owned by Carlton - Carlton have given the go-ahead for the CD, and so must fit in somewhere. The Fanderson releases, although official to some extent, must not enter public domain, as they have only been licenced for (effectively) club members; that's why Fanderson have a clause in their membership which prohibits anyone from selling merchandise. (Despite this, the Space CDs still turn up on ebay regularly.) If Carlton wanted to put a music-only track on the DVD, they would (I think) potentially have to pay the re-use fees, which would bump up the cost of the DVDs considerably. The best bet therefore is for Fanderson to release the UFO music. It should be noted that quite a bit of the UFO music does not exist in stereo (or at least on multi-track tapes where the music can be mixed down into stereo). Barry unfortunately had a habit of saving money (which given the cost of reel to reel audio tape isn't surprising), and wiped the music tapes with each successive series. Hence, the reason why one of the Space episode suites is in mono - Fanderson had to use one of Barry Gray's personal reels which exists in mono and single track. I think it's been said that no multi-track tape exists prior to Thunderbirds, and after that it's hit and miss as to whether there are multi-track tapes. Hope that answers some questions (probably posing more along the way!) Gareth Bevan writes: >I've suggested a number of ideas to Fanderson, which they may or may not >take on board. It might be worth considering releasing the music as an >audio >track on the DVD releases - This is a great idea, and fans have suggested it for the previous Carlton DVD's, but so far it hasn't happened. :-( For some odd reason, the Carlton folks say that they don't have the rights to do a music-only track, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense if Carlton just allowed Fanderson to release a soundtrack CD! Perhaps someone smarter than I could explain that to me? :-) I would suggest that if the DVD's had a music-only track, they should use the mono mixes on Barry Gray's personal tapes. Then Fanderson could release their new stereo mixes on CD, and not have to worry about including every single bit of music, because it'd already be available on the DVD's music track. Also, they wouldn't have to worry as much about fans not being interested in buying the CD, because the CD would have much better sound quality than the DVD. Just a thought.... _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. |
