UFO Soundtrack - Download or buy?

lazenbyland
I've thought about buying the UFO soundtrack from Fanderson but the
£31 price tag seems a bit pricey.

However, one of the UFO websites has music from UFO, Space 1999 and
Doppelganger that I can download myself (only recommended if you have
broadband. They are huge file sizes).

So is it worth forking out £31 for the full 154 minutes worth or
shall I just download the free stuff?

Well, I'm of two minds on this subject. On one hand,
it's great to get some music without spending a load
of money. On the other, if we don't support Fanderson
by purchasing the stuff from them, they may not be
able to bankroll future projects.

Now, I find it hard to justify spending a load a cash
to join a fanclub to simply buy a CD, which is what
I'd have to do to get one (or pay a lot on eBay).
Unless I can pursuade some fine Fanderson member to
buy it for me with my money or something.

I don't mind file sharing if it's hard to find stuff,
but the climate these days is terrible with the music
industry going buts over this kind of stuff.

I guess I really didn't answer your question. what
site are you speaking of, BTW?

Buy the soundtrack. If you have any respect for the music and its composer
this is the only honest thing to do, surely? You will then get a nice
booklet etc as well. Whatever the perceived merits or otherwise of the
Fanderson soundtracks (and personally *I* think they are bloody good, top
quality items WELL worth the money), I think that downloading stuff
wholesale from the web (or burning copies of the soundtracks and then
selling them, etc etc) just puts future plans for this sort of merchandise
in danger. Apart from anything else, supporting Fanderson in these ventures
mean that they can plough the profits into more soundtrack projects in the
future. This sort of thing is very expensive after all - and the results in
general far exceed anything a commercial record company can do.

I want to see a soundtrack of John Cameron's music to THE PROTECTORS for
example! And I think Fanderson are exactly the right people for the project.
But I think their current merchandise ventures should be supported if at all
possible so that future projects can be secured.

My opinion.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly!!!

The only reason the UFO soundtrack is a little more expensive after all is
because they have had to divide the production costs across a relatively
small target audience compared to CDs released to the general market... when
you think of it that way, I think the price is quite reasonable.

Best, Griff

You can download 154 minutes of UFO music from somewhere? Where?
Last I checked there's only a few minutes of UFO music available on
the web, and most of it's on my site!

Also note that none of the MP3's on my site are from the Fanderson
soundtrack -- mine are all from the original mono mixes, good for
comparing with Fanderson's stereo mixes :-)

When you join Fanderson, you get one of the best (if not, the best) fan
magazines out there on any subject. Every issue has something about UFO
(interviews, background, locations, pictures etc etc) in it, and all the
other Fanderson productions beside.

If you love UFO and are not getting the Fanderson, and hence not getting the
magazine, then you're REALLY missing out!

Generally, how often do they publish new or otherwise
interesting info regarding UFO, Space:1999 and /or
Space Precinct (the only 3 GA shows I watch)? That
would dictate my joining up.

ANY sort of CD sold in England is expensive anyway (unless you really shop
around or buy via the Internet). Its one of the items that is regularly
cited as being a "rip off " here - there has been at least one enquiry
launched by the government into high CD prices.. So I think its churlish to
complain about the high cost of the Fanderson CDs. All the proceeds they get
goes into making the *next* CD, and the money is right up front for all to
see when you look at the high quality. If they were able to sell to the
general public and not be limited by the terms of their licencing
agreement(ie, a limited number for sale to members only), they'd doubtless
be able to reduce the cost per unit. As it is, the public will have to wait
for a commercial release (probably by Silva Screen) which - while it will be
cheaper - will contain nowhere near as much music. There's always a
tradeoff!

So I'd agree completely with Griff's comments above.

What is the average cost of CDs in the UK? Not from
Fanderson just from your local music store. In the US,
we can pay up to $18 which comes out to about 11
pounds UK. If it's a double CD set, probably $25 or
more here (15 pounds).

If the Fanderson CDs are around the normal price you
guys pay, you're getting a raw deal. Why are they so
much?

If you are economical now, there might not be any good new UFO material
available in the future.

I think I would be correct if I said that UFO, and Space 1999 are covered in
every issue, and Space Precinct info as well. It is not a secret that Chris
Bentley's favourite show is UFO, and I think you can sense that from the
magazine :) , although all the other GA shows get more than a fair look in
as well.

This link gives further info: http://www.fanderson.org.uk/fabinfo.html

You get 4 issues a year. I think they generally have 56 pages... and as I
said it's the best fan mag going... and I belong to a number.

Welcome to rip-off Britain, where CD's and cars cost 30-40% more than
elsewhere... actually most things in the UK cost more than in the rest of
Europe... and just do not talk to me about the cost of car fuel... It's
about 4 or 5 times more than folks pay in the US!

Never mind... the weather's lovely ;)

On the other hand, you guys have things on vdieo that
I would kill for out here. TV shows long forgotten in
the US are given new life in the UK. Frankly, I'm
surprised 1999, UFO, Danger Man, The Avengers, etc are
even on DVD here. But, they're all British, so that
usually means "classy" (even through your comedies are
as raunchy as ours - but somehow you're funnier).
Imagine A&E video putting out Lost In Space or Voyage
to the Bottom of the Sea or The Six Million Dollar
Man. Hah!

Those shows aren't even on TV here. Grrr...

But, 5 times more money for auto fuel? That truly
sucks and we bitch mightily about our gas prices here.

Newly released CDs, £10-£13. Full price is about £15 I think,
and less popular CDs can often only be had for full price.
However very many older CDs are available at discount at £8 or
less, sometimes as little as £3.

In general, I was saying that CD prices in the UK are very expensive. I get
lots of filmscores on CD and I find it cheaper to buy online and ship them
over from the States! I wasn't saying that a 2 CD set of any music would
also be in the region of £31 because it wouldn't - but its a known fact that
here in the UK CD prices are 'rip off' compared to the US and much of
Europe. DVDs likewise. The fact is that the UFO CD set is a limited edition
(and relatively costly to produce) and you can't really compare. But I was
just pointing out that here in England, *any* sort of CD is more expensive
than its likely to be elsewhere!

Yes Marc. The music is on your site.

http://www.ufoseries.com/

However I produced three CDs using the music from your site(for my
own use) and whilst its great to hear it in isolation, having heard
the quality of the music on the newly released James Bond
soundtracks, I think I will buy the Fanderson version.

Bottom line is I know I'll regret NOT buying it in years to come.

Mind you, it hasn't stopped someone from trying to flog a bootleg
