UFO:The Comic?

Kez Wilson
Greetings!

I've been lurking around this list for quite a while (I'm just
waiting for the box set of UFO to be released in the UK so I can
catch up on watching the series), but thought I'd chime in after
reading a few posts about the possible movie in production.

I've licensed another Gerry Anderson show, SUPERCAR, to produce a
comic book series that will pick up where the TV show left off. You
can see a teaser here:

http://www.miscmayhemprods.com/supercar/supercar_promo.jpg

When putting together the proposal for the comic series, my writing
partner Michael Wolff and I had to figure out a way to update the
series (to create new fans) without alienating the old fans. Our
solution was the passage of time. But rather than say 30 years had
passed, we opted to say that the original TV adventures had occurred
only 8 or so years ago. Without going into the details, one of the
main characters drops out of circulation for the better part of a
decade, and when he returns, he finds the world has moved on without
him.

As for UFO, since it was set in the future to begin with, 30 years
farther into the future wouldn't be a big deal. Advances in SHADO
technology and weaponry would be impressive. And characters like
Straker could either move up in the ranks as the organization became
larger, or get drummed out and become a renegade alien buster.

So my question is, would there be interest in a comic book
mini-series for UFO? Of course, the jury is still out on whether
there will be a market for the Supercar series (an admittedly more
obscure Gerry Anderson title).

I'll be looking into the availability of the comic book rights for
UFO in the mean time, but I'd be interested in your feedback.

Graphic novels are the best! I know I'd read a comic book that had
wonderful artwork of the whole crew in it. It would be like fan fic with
pictures!

Hi Kez,
I'd most diffinately be interested in a UFO comic if as Denise said it
was done in the style of a graphic novel. If you could get someone with the
style of drawing Jim Steranko who did Marvel's Nick Fury Agent of
S.H.I.E.L.D. in the late sixies and early 70's that would be terriffic. He
had of way of drawing characters who looked real praticularly his females and
did fantastic things with equipment and technically devices.

The upcoming Supercar comic looks terrific, you can count on me to buy a
couple of copies of each issue.

For UFO there was a Japanese Manga continuation of UFO a few years back,
you might want to look at it and see where they went. Some of the issues
are online at: http://www.enteract.com/~detroyes/ufo1988/index.html'

The series was called UFO 1988.

Also check out some of the old Annual stories if you can for inspiration.

I always felt the old Innovation Lost In space comic was excellent, even
better than the LIS movie, a good continuation of the old series and Walt
Simonson's work on the old Battlestar Galactica comic (After the show had
been cancelled) was also great. Walt gave the character Jolly a lot to do
and stories were really great.

With the comic you have the freedom to pick up the story after The Long
Sleep or a few years later. Whatever you decide the most important thing
to remember is to tell a good story. If the story is an exciting
interesting tale then it won't matter if it's set five minutes after the
series or 50 years after the series!

Also, the story of Ed and Mary's marriage would make a great offshoot "soap
opera" type comic! For those of us who remember the old romance comics of
the 1960's and 1970's!

With compliments. Very good Art. Perfect cover layout. Interesting
project for Supercar at the moment and more interesting project for
UFO if this will be issued in future.

CGI or hand-drawn? I have made posable CGI models of a UFO and a UFO series
alien and an alien rifle (on http://www.buckrogers.demon.co.uk )

(1) The art looks good, except that I don't know Japanese.
(2) The link is valid. Some of you may have thoought that it was 404 :: that
happened to me, because Phil quoted the WWW address with an apostrophe
attached to its end, and my Pegasus emailer treated that apostrophe as part of
the address. WHen quoting WWW or email addresses, don't put any extraneous
punctuation or other characters in contact with the address.

Definitely: YES !!!!

By the way, with comic books you may afford things that could not be done
on video (and I do not mean only drawings and special effects; have a look
at some Dark Horse comics based on Alien/Aliens; they are too cynical for
the big screen, but sometimes they are great).

Re: UFO:The Comic?

Hi Kez

The Supercar cover is dynamic - I look forward to seeing the actual
issues. I think with Carlton more willing to look into options for
merchandise than previous incumbants, you stand a good chance of
getting more options yourself if the 'Supercar' issues take off.

I would definitely be interested in a 'UFO' graphic novel - the TV
series left so much open for scope. Do the format justice, with some
cutting edge art, and you'll hopefully have a winner.

Keep us updated please.
