Thanks for the help with the poll, everyone!! I did check out the results of the poll you posted, Marc, Thanks. I need an "angle" you see. I might write it from a personal point of view eg. go on about why I particularly love the show ( Paul in the sauna pic will be in there, regardless). The mag I'm doing it for want it for a bit of variety from the usual articles of obscure 60' bands that no one's ever heard of. I'm going to have to go for the freakier aspect of the show, adult themes and Psychedelic visuals also the sex appeal
that is rife in the show and on this list too. I'm not going to be paid for it either. What was UFORIA?? Are there any more conventions planned for this year for fans? I'd love to meet Ed Bishop. Is he a friendly guy?? Does anyone have any good stories about encounters with cast members? My favourite bit of hardware would have to be Ed's car if we are talking strictly about vehicles. I love moonbase, particularly the vending machines in the leisure shere and Ed's whisky dispenser on his underground office, even though he says he never touches the stuff. He drinks champagne with Mary on his honeymoon, are there any other instances? Is there a point where he becomes teetotal which is apparent in the show? It would be good to make more use of the files section. Are we able to upload files ourselves, Mr. Moderator? I only checked out the files section from work a couple of days ago and I'm subscribed from home so obviously I wasn't recognised. Can we look forward to seeing peoples convention photos up there soon?? Over & Out (for now) Liz.xxxxx [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

But when she tells him he drinks it anyway! And as you say, there's a bit of a lapse earlier when he drinks the champagne. Neither the reason nor the time when he became teetotal is portrayed in any of the episodes. It's very interesting that he keeps a spirits dispenser in his office for visitors though. He obviously doesn't have strong anti-alcohol feelings. .. then Liz wrote: > Also in "Courtmartial" when he is totally laying into Paul and > ordes him to be shot when he jupms through Ed's artistic > lightshow screen!!! (only blanks but he's still outrageously > evil). It's a few months since I've watched Court Martial but .. blanks? I know that he was shot with a tranquiliser dart eventually, but at the point where the guards run after him at the beginning, their weapons surely would have been loaded with live rounds. I read a fan fiction story that says that seemed to say that Straker is a reformed alcoholic. If so, then he wouldn't be casually drinking at work, as a successfully dried-off reformed alcoholic must stay 100% completely off alcohol regardless of whatever offers and politenesses, else he would be back into full addiction again at once. If you don't believe me, ask Alcoholics Anonymous or similar. It is likelier that he, like me, was always teetotal from the beginning. |

It doesn't seem to gel with his character that he'd allow himself the luxury of the excessive drinking required to become alcoholic, no matter what the provocation. But there's no suggestion that he drinks casually at work - it's clear that the dispenser is only ever used for visitors. Also, Mary wouldn't hand him a drink (in CC-AOK) if she knew that it might cause him to descend into alcohol dependency again. > If you don't believe me, ask Alcoholics Anonymous or similar. It > is likelier that he, like me, was always teetotal from the > beginning. > Well there's no real answer of course but I'd say he was more likely to have been a moderate drinker who gave it up in order to keep a clear mind while pursuing a military career. As we see in CC-AOK, he's not 100% teetotal, at least at that stage in his life. James |

I seem to remember Alec Freeman getting drink from the dispenser in one
episode and offering Straker a drink and than saying "oh i forget you don't touch the stuff do you" |
