Some people have been mailing to say that a new UFO movie might not work, as
people wouldn't remeber the series and so would not watch a remake or
updated version, but I have to disagree. First of all, there is still a
massive following for UFO, as the large number of members in this groups
alone shows, as well as the massive amount of merchandise either available
now or coming out. And as for securing the younger audience, those who
might not have seen UFO originally, that I think would depend on the script.
The trick is to write something that stands alone as a good piece of
science fiction, so that it doesn't matter if some of the audience have
never seen the original series. Chances are that if the film was good
enough and well-thought-out, you might even attract a new gang of followers
to the original series.
I know that the film version of 'Lost in Space' has been mentioned, but I
think that this was a good example - I only ever saw a few of the original
episodes and so knew very little about the series, but I enjoyed the film
just as a science fiction film.
Personally, I'm only 23, so I never saw UFO when it was first broadcast -
that was about nine years before I was born, so I'm pretty certain that the
show has an appeal for younger viewers too. However I don't think I'd like
to see a remake. I'd rather carry on from where the series left off, having
some of the actors back for cameos, as their older selves. For me, no one
will ever be Straker but Ed Bishop!
