Rob,

Agree with all that you say although depends on the effort they expend putting them onto Bluray. I find Bluray quality
both picture and sound very variable.

Was watching the complete DVD series over the last couple of days again with a good DVD player
with up-scaling for me these DVD's come close to an "average" Bluray disk, a very good DVD cut. I certainly have enough detail to see all the bloomers, so not sure Bluray will make much difference, I wouldn't look to pay the upgrade unless
and no idea if possible as it was a TV series if a 16:9 version was possible.

Have to say just a remark in general it's amazing per episodes at the end how much previous episodes are
cut and pasted in, I think your only getting maybe 10 mins of new film.... but I love it!

Mark

The DVDs have the best resolution currently available.  The episodes
shown on HD cable/satellite channels were 'upscaled' to HD by the
broadcaster, so the only way to get those would be if someone recorded
them and then (illegally) uploaded them to a p2p server etc.

It is possible to find software which will allow you to rip the DVDs
and then upscale to HD so that you could theoretically create your own
blu-ray discs, but it is debatable whether they would look any better
when played back on an HDTV than just letting your DVD player/TV do
the upscaling (which is the normal way DVDs are viewed on an HDTV.)

Some of us are hoping that the original UFO filmstock is re-digitized
directly to HD format and released on blu-ray by the copyright owners
as this is the only way that we will ever get to see *true* HD quality
versions, rather than upscaled ones, and only possible because the
original footage is on 35mm filmstock (which exceeds HD resolution.)

Not true -- Technicolour remastered UFO in HDTV many years ago,
using the original 35mm camera negatives.  These were then broadcast
in the USA on "Family Room HD" for many years.  I'm not sure if they
were ever broadcast in 1920x1080, but I do know they were
broadcast in 1280x1080 (an odd, anamorphic satellite TV resolution).
Techicolour remastered these as 16:9 (same as for Thunderbirds),
so the top and bottom of the original frame are missing.

This is true.  Many years ago there were quite a few episodes (maybe
half the series?) available as 720p files on the BitTorrent networks.

some dvd players with a hdmi output allows you to upscale also.  my ps3 does this, so does a dvd recorder.
