sad to hear that Ed Bishop died a few years ago aged ( I think ) 72 He was a great actor , he had the looks and a great speaking voice. Never knew he was that old, but then if UFO was made in the 60s ! thats a long long time ago.! Firstly: No-one suggested that Ed Bishop was gay, and Michael Billington himself once commented that the scene between Straker and Foster in the armoury from Kill Straker was homo-erotic. While "Sue's" comments were unrealistic, I might point out that this is also true for most of the overanalytical speculation about the UFO characters that is posted on the list. > > I'd also like to remind people that both Ed and Mike > were parents and one should consider their families before > rattling off with such unsubstantiated excrement. > > An absurd overreaction Pam frankly, and one that smells more than faintly of homophobia, to be frank. Dear James et al - like the poster who has been spreading unsubstantiated stories about Ed and Mike, James has jumped, quite erroneously, to the opinion that I am homophobic - get it straight (pun intended!) - I am not nor have I EVER been homophobic. I have alot of gay friends. You neglected to read obviously the spot in my original message that I felt being gay did NOT make anyone less of a person and a person's sexual orientation was nobody's business. That being said - I have seen no scenes in any eps of UFO and since I bought the Megaset and recently watched all 26 eps as recently as 3 weeks ago - I take issue with anyone who says there are inferences of homoerotica. Just wasn't done in the 1960's.This is not a reflection of homphobia on my part - am simply stating a fact - in the 1960's TV shows had an enormous list of issues they could not get into - homosexuality was one of them. It is plausible had UFO been made currently you might see something like that if the producers chose to take the characters in that direction (I watch the L-Word and Queer as Folk, do you?), but back in the 60's censorship would not have permitted it. So get a grip James and read my ENTIRE posting, not just selected bits of it to back up your own supposition that I am homophobic! Re: Your 'So am I!' response to the comment, 'A nutter from New Jersey!' So, are you from New Jersey, or are you a nutter? Enquiring minds want to know! There has been much uproar about this amongst cinematographers and others and there may be some re-thinking, but for the moment BBC dramas are being shot either on Standard Def PAL Digibeta or on HD. Thanks John for the replies :-) So anything shot on 35mm/16mm film has to be converted into digital for transmission/DVD release, but both the Digibeta and HD are "filmed" directly onto a digital format - in other words, they don't use film? Why the uproar? :-) Sarah |

I didn't neglect to read that. The problem is, I didn't neglect to observe the general tone of your email either, nor the part where you described the suggestion made by the poster as "unsubstantiated excrement". I do not personally subscribe to the idea that any UFO scene was intentionally homo-erotic, but neither am I blinkered enough to suppose that this is an "unbelievably unrealistic" view. James |
