Very timely considering HD-DVD has just launched in the US.I take it this is a premier screening in HD?

I wonder if they were using old prints for transmission?

If they were and the're as beat up as the ones doing the rounds on ITV 4 in the UK at the moment, then what can we expect from the rumoured HD masters mentioned at a recent Fanderson convention.

As HDTV is also (again rather co-incidentally) just begun in the UK,perhaps we'll be able to view UFO in HD sooner rather than later, one way or another.

With all the copy protection issues surrounding anything HD,which means the purchase of new and compliant hardware,UFO is the one thing that just might see me being an early adopter.

Regards to all

I would think so!

There are various reports about them looking great, so either
these are upconverted versions of the remasters for the DVDs,
or actual HDTV remasters. Reportedly they are widescreen,
which means they are chopping off the top and bottom of
the original picture. I've also seen comments on them
having surround sound.

(those last 2 items make them inferior to the DVD versions,
if you ask me...)

Last year the subject of remastering UFO in HD with true surround
sound was discussed at some length; the conclusion being it would be
prohibitively expensive and therefore unlikely. There was a rumour
that a production company was interested in doing this - although it
was denied. Surely if UFO *has* been re-remastered in HD, we would
have heard about it? Incidentally, where are you reading these
comments?? :-)

If these transmissions are not new HD masters, I find it difficult
to believe that they could look any better than the DVDs would, even
on a conventional player and TV. Judging picture quality is mostly
subjective and also depends on what you're comparing it to, if
anything at all! :-)

I understand that it might be possible for SD recordings to look
slightly better if played on a HD player and TV - has anyone
actually done this with the UFO DVDs and could confirm this is true,
in their opinion?

I would definitely agree with you on the first. I watched a
TV programme last night which featured old sketches converted
to widescreen by being cropped - it really looked wrong,
quite claustrophobic in effect, and irritating. The most
stunning picture quality imaginable wouldn't make up for the
damage done by cropping off the top and bottom of the frame.

Well, I *did* hear about it from one of my sources. However,
since I never saw it backed up with other sources, I could
never be sure what was going on.

Some of them have been in emails, but this UFO broadcast
has been mentioned on these pages:
