Hi Lieve, Well the UFO VHS tapes cost about £11 each in the UK, and with one or two exceptions, there were two episodes on each tape. > > I don't have a use for a DVD player that can't record off TV, > I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. And what's > the point of buying a DVD player (even if one has the UFO DVD > set) if one has to buy a DVD writer in the foreseeable future? I think it's a situation that's analogous to the arrival of audio CD players compared to cassette player/recorders .. just as you couldn't record your favourite radio programmes with a CD player, most DVD players can't be used to record TV programmes (and for those that can the writeable media is very expensive), but the playback quality and additional features make it worthwhile for people who tend to buy prerecorded stuff. > Then there are the regional differences. Absolutely ridiculous, > those different standards. Just a thing to boost sales, I'm > sure :-) > Well - to be fair we were stuck with the different video standards (PAL, SECAM, NTSC) long before they thought of selling films and TV series in the shops - but as for the regional coding, I agree 100% .. thankfully we have the technology to defeat them! Wouldn't it be great if every country in the world had the same video standard, the same lightbulb sockets, the same mains plugs, the same voltage mains electricity .. But not the same money of course ;) James |

most modern dvd players allows you to change regions, but some only allow
you a couple of times to do so without shipping it back to the manufacturer Bruce ----- Original Message ----- From: "ultramannick" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Saturday, January 05, 2002 12:07 PM Subject: Re: [SHADO] UK UFO DVD's Officially Announced! > > Go to your nearest Sam's Club and check out the Daewoo > DVD player. I don't think they'd be selling in a video store though while most people are buying them through deepdiscountdvd.com for $19.19 shipping included! I saw them on the shelf at best buy listed at $39.99. A&E also began offering a T Shirt later on after the disks were released. Amazingly A&E ignored the original logo of Space 1999 and used B&W photos on the boxes instead of color. Still, it's nice having the disks and maybe the A&E Year two disks will be better if the come from remastered sources. But we'll see what happens. I think sales of the UFO disks ought go at least as good as the 1999 ones. I'm sure a lot fo the people who bought the 1999 disks will want to buy the UFO ones. Especially if they're priced at $19.19 for six episodes! Even with all the problems and warts on the A&E Space disks you can't beat the price. >My son works at Suncoast Video, and he told me that their Space:1999 DVDs >sit and sit and never move. I've never seen where more popular brands (Sony, JVC, etc) have ever had an option of changing regions, secret or not. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have a chipped Toshiba which works very well. You can find a list of DVD players with secret multi-region (and other) hacks here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/hacklist/dvdplayershack.html |

Marc, I checked Blackstar and amazon.co.uk but they don't have the UFO DVDs on pre-order so far. Of course I will be on the alert :-) As a rule I've learned that play247 is cheaper as amazon.co.uk and the prices includes the shipping costs (you mustn't forget to add this at the other shops!). I haven't watched Blackstar prices in the past. But one thing I've forgot to mention is the fact that "at the moment play247 do not supply to Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, Jersey or any Country outside of the EU". So this service is of good use for people in Europe only. Sorry, Marc :-( Oh, and good that you mentioned it, Marc! I've always wanted to ask: which kind of T-shirt offered Blackstar in the past? Had the shirt something to do with the show or rather with Blackstar ads? Was a photo print or a writing on it? Thanks, Marc! Sorry, Marc :-( Ahhh, so there's no sense in me pre-ordering from them! In any case, it seems a bit early to be pre-ordering -- I'll just wait for Blackstar to list them, as I've always had good luck ordering from them, and they've usually been a bit cheaper than Amazon.co.uk. > Oh, and good that you mentioned it, Marc! With the STINGRAY discs, they sent along a STINGRAY T-Shirt, with some artwork for the series on it. I never wear these sorts of shirts, but I think my wife wears them when she works out at the gym... :-) -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

After I sent my message I found the details on the multi-region
capabilities. My plan - well we have a stand-alone DVD for region 1 and I will set my computer DVD for region 2. As to warranties - if you're your own tech, taking the blasted thing out of the box voids the warranty. -----Original Message----- From: Anny Theberge [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Sunday, January 06, 2002 7:57 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] UK UFO DVD's Officially Announced! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Deborah Rorabaugh" <[hidden email]> > Well, if you've got a hot enough computer, Hival has a DVDRom for about > 60.00.
