The other side of the coin...
The guy had not one but *two* stressful jobs;
suffered losses he seemed to have trouble dealing with;
didn't have a personal life to speak of (aside from hunting swans, getting
vased and having a nice can opener, that is);
had to deal with opinionated superiors on one side and subordinates that
thought he was a regular walking/heartless, computer on the other;
had to work in an enclosed, subterranean environment while suffering from
claustrophobia;
had enemies trying kill him regularly (not mentioning some authors ;-);
and, to top it all, had whole Earth's safety and protection to think of...

Who wouldn't want to be Straker anyway? ;-)
