I hope Marc doesn’t mind me answering this. All those choices are the same Human vs whatever. Another more famous storyline is boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back.

Hi All - I have a big hard covered book of SF that lists a number of SF "types" of stories that seem to prevail in literature, comics, movies, TV shows (and yes UFO IS listed in the TV section as is Space 1999 and all of GA's shows). The book lists sub-categories such as alien invasion stories, planetary romances (not boy-girl or any other mashup - romance in this sense is not meant as relationship), time travel, etc. The books authors have gone back to the 1700's to describe precursors of today's SF, citing Thomas More's "Utopia", and of course Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein", moving up to writers such as Jules Verne and H.G. Wells etc. It's a very thoughtful exploration of the antecedents of SF and what we can expect from the future. Pam the Canuck

Well, we could do a rundown of what basic theme each episode falls under.
(Okay, for many of them it's a subplot or complication since who whole series is Human vs. Human (alien). But what other immortal themes show up as side plots or complications? _____ From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Bruce Sherman Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 1:20 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] What the....? It wouldn't be 'Science Fiction the Illustrated Encyclopedia' by John Clute?

I don't know. Is that a good reference book on sci-fi? Because I own "The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Science Fiction" by David Pringle, and it's a piece of crap where the only redeeming quality in the entire book is a nice shot of Straker in his car. I'd really like to read a good sci-fi reference book.

I think so. Here's an excerpt...
'THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION... Covering the history of the genre in all its forms, and lavishly illustrated with images from books, films, magazines, comics, and graphic novels, Science Fiction: The Illustrated Encyclopedia presents one-of-a-kind, decade-by-decade time charts with facinating insight into the cultural influences tht shaped the Science Fiction of each period.' The decade by decade time line I find quite helpful.
