Who's in charge?

I'm glad I bought the Complete UFO Book last year, as it has been
most useful when I've been watching the series on DVD. For example,
before I got the book, last time I watched "The Man Who Came Back",
something about it puzzled me, namely the scene where Straker tells
Colonel Gray that he would be running SHADO while he (Straker) went
into space to repair SID. What was puzzling me was that he was
passing command over not to Foster or Lake, who were esatblished
chracters, but to someone who only appears in this one episode. What
about Freeman?

Then all was made clear in said book. The character of Colonel Gray
was one of the possible replacements for George Sewell's character,
hence the line that concerned me. It was a choice between him and
Colonel Lake, and Colonel Lake became the replacement for George
Sewell's character.

Bit confusing, though, if you haven't read the book.

I feel guilty writing this -- but I think I prefered John Grey to
Lake. They were always changing her character.

I liked them both, but admittedly they had enough regular characters
already.

There was a UFO fan club around 1980 called "SHADO HQ", where the
people who wrote the newsletters just LOVED the Colonel Grey
character. They had photos of him, bios, the works -- all for
a character who appeared in just one episode.

I liked Col. Grey too.... Not that I didn't like Lake; she was easy to
look at, but her character stank. Grey was the only one exhibiting brains in
that one episode he appeared in.

I dont remember Colonel Grey. What episode was he in. I did like Col. Lake
better. She was a perfect foil for Straker. I like women in strong roles.

Wow. A whole thing just based on a temporary character ;) one who
was right when Straker was wrong, no less.

I agree. Lake was just the helpless woman who got into trouble but
otherwise served no purpose...
