Re: Konami figures and eBay

High Cotton
Well you could have bought them below what U.S. retail will be a few weeks
ago from HLJ. Your plan seems to be a bit sketchy to me...

We'll see...because of the dock strikes on west coast many specialized toy
retailers in the US haven't even recieved their shipments yet. I plan to
buy
them retail in a month.

I would have agreed with that a few years ago when Fanderson didn't
accept credit card orders. But now it's not so bad. Just fill out a
form and drop it in the mail. However, this still reduces "impulse
buys" -- if Fanderson had online ordering, I probably would have
ordered the UFO script book the first day it was available. Instead,
this was something I procrastinated -- I seem to procrastinate more
if something has to be mailed. And sometimes the things I
procrastinate lead to things never being bought at all...

Oh, also with the script book, Fanderson already had produced a
script book with the script for IDENTIFIED, so again that's more
overlap and possibly less of a reason to buy the new script book.
Perhaps the book would have sold better if all the scripts had never
been seen before (not previously released by Fanderson and not on my
website)

I don't know about others, but sometimes I *hate* being left with half-a-bag.
I wonder if some people are holding back to see if other books in the series
will be released??? I know this is self-defeating as if you don't buy this
one, then no others will be released. There's always the danger too that
people will only buy the book(s) that contain their favorite episodes. While I
like "production order" items, it sometimes works against you in a book series
like this. By time you get to the more popular episodes, the funding has dried
up to get there.

I not convinced the prices will drop by any great margin as some one
has mentioned we are not talking about a tv series that has been over
marketed, any way the HLJ price will be way way below the retail
price of any specialized toy importer witnessed by Comet selling them
at fifteen quid a piece. Of course the bath tub curve principle will
apply to eBay, and the prices will level off and maybe even drop very
slightly. I doubt a dock strike is holding much up these up, we are
tlaking very small models here, most if not all would have been air
frieghted in - I guess we will see.

Just thought if you were to buy a set of 6 from Comet [a specialised
toy importer] it is going to set you back £90 plus post, and they
don't seem to have the Ellis figure. I got three boxes from HLJ at a
1/3 less than that. In my humble opinion those who have played the
waiting game on these particular items, may have miss the boat.

Good observations Marty.

These were just released Last Week in Japan.

If a retailer in the U.S. is receiving them by boat they
wouldn't have them any time soon anyway.

How about the comic shops (in larger cities), Japanese bookstores, Japan town
in San Francisco....Toy Shop magazine, toy shops in Australia/New
Zealand...several toy shops in LA and Santa Monica....
eBay is the last resort.

My other experience with anything Japanese toy related is that you will see
it again in greater numbers if the sales are good. How many zillion
reissues of Imai Tbirds kits have come around over the years?
The tools have been created for these wonderful models, and I'm sure you will
see another 'limited' run fairly soon. It's just good business sense for
them to reappear if they are going to be profitable.
I'm not trying to stir any pots, just observations...
Also, don't ever, ever buy from Comet Miniatures! Everything he sells is
available in the UK from a zillion other retailers cheaper.

I thought the Script Book was a superbly designed and produced piece
of work. I read it from cover to cover, put it on the shelf and
haven't looked at it since. I'd also buy every other one that was
released too....but the same thing would happen. I tend not to be
that interested in looking at this sort of thing just to note the
differences between screened episode and original draft, I have to
say. I think Script Books are more relevant to people particularly
interested in tv writing and behind the scenes work. Also, now the
episodes are easily available in various formats (such as DVD,and the
fact that scripts or transcripts are likewise available on the Net
means perhaps that Script Books are less relevant. I know some fans
think that they are virtually unreadable in comparison to - say - a
novel. I buy Script Books from other series (eg just bought one for
THE WEST WING)and much as I love them on the first read, I don't dig
them out that often.

I think Fanderson is right on target here. Personally I do not agree
that EC Tubb is everyones favourite Space 1999 author,or that his
books were necessarily the best of the series (I think this was
largely perpetuated by Fanderson with little actual evidence)but I
sure am looking forward to the EARTHFALL re-issue,even though I
bought the original when it came out in 1977. I'd also welcome
further original PROFESSIONAL fiction from Space 1999 and UFO (ie not
fan stories or collections). Powys Books in the USA have inaugurated
a series of new Space 1999 original novels which personally I welcome
with anticipation. But even here, it has been obvious (eg by looking
at messages on the Online Alpha List)that not everyone is interested.
(In the same way that I am not interested in models or videos
of "Message From Moonbase Alpha":-) The fact is,one man's meat is
anothers poison and this makes it very hard when you are deciding
what merchandise to market;especially when you are on a budget and
selling basically to a limited audience(and where everyone seems to
have different ideas of what items they want to see...)

It does appear that a majority are fully behind the soundtracks, and
rightly so IMO!

Lastly can I suggest that the Fanderson YahooGroup forum also be used
for communications such as this one from Nick? Members can be asked
to forward their views not to that forum (which doesn't accept
postings)but to FABmail or to Nick direct. The Fanderson Yahoo group
seems underused to me and I wonder actually what is the point in
being on it.
