Regarding the amnesia drug: Bill Cotter is correct in stating that certain drugs used during anesthesia can produce amnesia. (ex: fentanyl) They do not erase memories that were acquired prior to the drugs administration though.
The same holds true for the date rape drugs such as ketamine. Since the government experimented with LSD in an attempt to use it for military applications I would assume that the thought of designing an amnesia drug had crossed
their minds. You can be sure you won't run across it in the PDR if an amnesia drug is designed. Regarding the drug's administration (IV vs oral) - I had wondered years ago why, in some episodes, it is injected and in others it
is administered orally? I still don't know why (any guesses?) but I do know that many drugs come in IV, oral and IM preparations and there are reasons for choosing one over the other. Oral administration tends to be the safest
route (slow delivery) and it is more convenient. IV has the advantage of rapid onset, 100% availability in the bloodstream and it is the preferred route of administration if the patient is unwilling or unable to take the oral
form. So in "Sound of Silence" I guess serving up a nice cup of earl grey tea (with the drug in it) was not an option :)
