Well, since Straker was an American military officer and would have needed
permission to marry a foreign national and his position on Henderson's staff
and in military intelligence would have meant the CIA and/or MI5 would have
done a pretty through background check on her - If Henderson had honestly
believed that Mary was going to be a detriment to Straker's career in any
way the marriage wouldn't have been approved in the first place.
A far more likely scenario for Henderson's statement about 'understanding
wives': his own marriage was in trouble (or had ended) due to his own
single-minded dedication of getting SHADO started.
And HAD Mary been so gauche as to make snide remarks concerning Straker's
career to Henderson - well, as Freeman said, SHADO security made the CIA
look like a bunch of Sunday school teachers. Straker would have gotten a
visit from a very sympathetic police officer telling him the brakes on her
car failed and it must have been instantaneous.

comments like these in canon seem to refer to what conjecture as this;
straker in private to mary 'we are going to save the world mary, thats all i
can tell you about what i do'
and then later she blurts out to g. henderson;
''hello general, im mary straker, im so pleased to meet you, and that you
enlisted my husband ed into the military clergy to save the world.' [offers
her hand to general henderson in a handshake]
i'm sure that we will all be happy to be part of ed's flock.'
[she stares blankly, smiling stupidely at him] ''
i could see general henderson giving straker a serious reprimand for having
her say things like that at some party or occasion.
and thats why straker is ready to hit henderson and says that he goes to
far.
