I haven't written it - but most likely they were told that some remains were
found and identified via DNA. Capt Carlin would naturally be in on this
expalanation, telling his parents the body was so badly decomposed (all that
was left was some bones and hair) it would need to be a closed casket
funeral, if they were going to have a casket at all.
Since the ID was via DNA, no viewing of the body would have been necessary
and Capt. Carlin would have handled that with his parents anyway. The faked
autopsy report would indicate that cause of death was undetermined due to the
state of the body, but she had been dead from about the time she was declared
missing. This would also be put into the police file on the case, which would
have been classified originally as a kidnapping, now murder, without leads
as Peter's story was not credible and the only other witness was dead or
missing. Actually, Peter was lucky - since his sister and the woman with him
were dead or missing, he was the most likely suspect. Luckily for him, it's
hard to shoot yourself in the back and the slugs taken from him would have
matched those taken from the scene, which would have shown he was well away
from the shooter and it was non-standard ammunition.
