Interesting point.
I think that many costumes in UFO used "velcro". This is visible in
some Straker's costumes when the jacket is open. In any case
the "velcro" material is invented and produced in 1941.
I find this information from:
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/1999/century/episodes/04/VELCRO
1941
One day, after taking a walk in the woods with his dog, Swiss
inventor George de Mestral discovered that both his pet and his pants
were covered with burrs. Curious about the seed pods' sticking
qualities, de Mestral examined the burrs under a microscope.
He discovered that the burrs had small hooks that tangled themselves
on loops found in fur or cloth. He then decided to copy nature's
design -- and create a two-sided fastening device. The result was
called Velcro, taken from the two words "velour" and "crochet."
