If memory serves me correctly, the intent was to capture a UFO intact;
hence Karlin was not called upon to blast the spinner out of the sky.
Furthermore, when you have this fact firmly in mind, it actually makes the
UFO's explosion in front of Foster's Mobile all that much more jarring.
