The discs are PAL, but your TV cannot display PAL, hence the
distortion when you try to watch them in their native format. Your
player is one of the few that contains a video standards converter to
convert the 625 line / 50 field PAL video to 525/60 NTSC that your TV
can handle. Unfortunately, the conversion is pretty crude and will
introduce conversion artefacts, notably judder on pans and fast
motion and stepping on diagonal lines. If you're pleased with the
quality of the pictures you're seeing, you would be astonished at how
much better it would look if you were watching in native PAL!
