Also, I'd question the timing of it -- science fiction appears
to be going through a lull right now.  


I know this might sound slanderous, but do we have to think of it as science
fiction? With movies and TV these days it could almost be defined as drama.
Let's step away from the box for a moment and look at it from a "drama" point
of view rather than sci-fi.
