I am not, of course, an attorney and I have rarely been on TV, so
take
what I say for what it is worth.
The Star Wars universe appears to have been opened up by George Lucas
so fans can make films without any worry.
As for the Star Trek universe, apparently that Exeter film has
attracted Paramount's attention. So, perhaps that film might get
squelched. And that would be too bad, because it does look like an
amazing film so far.
So, as for UFO, it is likely that there could be some issues there.
I'm not sure if fan fiction is the same kind of issue - one is just a
different medium than the other.
You might be able to get away with stories or films as long as you
don't get big enough to attract attention. And that's unfortunate.
