A zeitgeist thing really. Of course smoking WAS much more common back
then, but a few decades ago, smoking in films and TV series was a sort of
badge of style and sophistication; film-makers used it to embody their
characters with an aura of manly cool. Even the Thunderbird puppets
liked the occasional ciggie.
If I remember correctly, Gerry Anderson considered having the cigarettes
digitally removed from the remastered Thunderbirds DVD release, but the
cost was found to be prohibitively expensive.
