Hi Karl

I read Andrew Chaikin's excellent book, "A Man on the Moon" and in
it he explains that the lack of mobility for the astronauts was due
to the suits being pressurised and stiff, and that even in 1/6th
gravity, the bulk of the suit and the backpacks affected movement.
However, there is the clip of John Young leaping up about 3' into
the air and saluting to show the lesser gravity.

without being they there first?

The only explanations I can find is either the alien rifle can be
adapted to throw a grappling hook or that Foster had a small
launcher in one of his suit pouches for the same purpose.
