This was not a mistake on the makers' part. Dinky made a very conscious
decision to paint them green, rather than to reflect the colours of the
interceptors as they wre in the programme.

Dinky were in the toy business, ie selling as much as possible to the kiddies.
Their market research of the day told them that in general, "kids [ie boys]
don't buy white toys". So they decided to use a more colourful approach.

Simple marketing!
